Japanese Green Tea Kukicha: The Stem Tea of Japan

Kukicha is a traditional Japanese green tea crafted from the stems, stalks, and twigs of the Camellia sinensis plant. Unlike leaf-based teas, it is naturally lower in caffeine, resulting in a smooth, mellow cup with light sweetness and a refreshing aroma. Its pale green infusion and subtle nutty notes make it a distinctive choice in Japan, often enjoyed in the evening for its calming effect.

Harvested and processed in Japan, Kukicha contains unique essential oils from the plant’s stems and twigs, which give it a delicate balance of flavor and aroma. Its composition makes it an accessible tea both for beginners and experienced drinkers looking for a lighter alternative to stronger Japanese teas.

WHAT MAKES KUKICHA UNIQUE

Kukicha, also known as “twig tea,” has been part of Japanese tea culture for centuries. Instead of young leaves, it is produced from stems left after Sencha or Gyokuro harvests. These stems are carefully steamed, dried, and blended to create a tea that is both affordable and aromatic.

Because of its unique origin, Japanese Kukicha has:

  • Lower caffeine compared to Sencha or Matcha, making it gentler on the body.

  • High levels of minerals and amino acids retained in the stems, including L-theanine, which supports calm focus.

  • A mild, naturally sweet taste that distinguishes it from leaf teas with more bitterness.

FLAVOR AND COLOR PROFILE OF KUKICHA

  • Pale green infusion

  • Fresh grassy and floral aroma

  • Smooth and mild taste

  • Light natural sweetness

  • No bitterness or astringency

KUKICHA HEALTH BENEFITS

  1. Mineral-Rich & Alkalizing
The stems and twigs of Kukicha absorb a high level of minerals - like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and fluoride - making it alkalizing and supportive of bone and dental health.

  2. Antioxidant-Rich
Like other green teas, Kukicha contains polyphenols and catechins - natural antioxidants that help protect against cellular oxidation.

  3. Low Caffeine, Gentle on the System
Kukicha has significantly less caffeine than typical green teas, making it calming and suitable for any time of day - even in the evening.

  4. Supports Digestive Balance
Its alkalizing nature and minerals help neutralize acidity and support digestion after meals.

  5. Soothing and Grounding
With a creamy, nutty flavor and minimal caffeine, Kukicha offers a grounded, gentle energy - great for relaxation without overstimulation.

BREWING TIPS FOR JAPANESE GREEN TEA KUKICHA

  1. Use warm water only (80 - 90 °C), avoid boiling water.

  2. Add 2 g (approx. 1 tsp) of tea per 120 ml water.

  3. Steep for under 1 minute - longer steeping creates a stronger, more concentrated flavor.

  4. Can be re-brewed up to 2 times.

  5. Enjoy warm or pour over ice for a refreshing cold brew.
